Garden Gnome

Lying on the road, eyes open wide
Cars driving fast right by my side
Can't get a glance at the passers-by
I couldn't turn my head even if I tried

I'm stuck here looking at the sky

It happened yesterday on top of the hill
A lawnmower started, then I froze still
Any sudden noise and I'll hold in place
This expression stuck upon my face

I'm stuck here looking at the sky
I'm a garden gnome, I'm a garden gnome, I'm a garden gnome

I was dying to see your face ("we meandered across the garden")
We had a good time the other day ("filled with hungry cottontails")
But here I am in this place ("tulips planted long ago")
Unmoving in every way

Floating over my head is wind-blown trash
The remnants of a far-gone crash
Never go back to my house of stone
Lying on the road, feeling all alone

I'm stuck here looking at the sky
I'm a garden gnome, I'm a garden gnome, I'm a garden gnome, I'm a garden gnome

Songfacts: Things appear to be getting grim for our little gnomes. One of them appears to realize they are a garden gnome and becomes the statue they are today. There is a callback here to the Turnbull and Screwt song. I wrote the lyrics and came up with the rhythm for this song on a flight back from Kansas City after seeing a Rolling Stones concert. The guitar is a doubletracked Stratocaster using the phased pickup settings in treble first and then in bass.
