Here I Am Alive

Looking across this yellowed plain
Where some burned out cars remain
Scattered shrubs and shifting dunes
Broken stones and weathered ruins

Here I am alive, trying to survive
Here I am alive, trying to survive

I've forgotten why I'm here
Just make sure that water's near
No time to wonder about the past
'Cause every moment might be my last

Here I am alive, learning to survive
Here I am alive, learning to survive

It would come as a surprise
To look into another's eyes
Loneliness is all I feel
Sometimes the end has an appeal

Here I am alive, the last one to survive
Here I am alive, the last one to survive
Here I am alive, the last one to survive

Songsfacts: This song restarted my current wave of recording. My family was binge watching X-Files, and during the start of a new episode, I tried to play along with the theme song on my Korg keyboard. I found a great sine wave sound, but I wasn't getting the theme right. After the show I started playing the keyboard again and came up with the basics of this song.

Once I had the organ music, I made a phone memo recording of it and played along on my acoustic. The lyrics came pretty fast. I was thinking of a dystopian future (like I usually do) and the song was born. The last stanza took a few tries, and I debated putting something in that strong, but it really captured my mood at the time.

This song was recorded in the back bathroom of my house. At first I used no sound dampening giving the guitar and chorus a big sound, but I later put a sleeping bag over the shower door to sing into and give the lead vocal a more "present" sound.
